PINATA:

This girl is running through the frame while her mother in the background tries to locate and hit the pinata strung on a wire above them. Not in the frame is a very large dog named Galeano that stole some of the candies as they fell to the ground when the pinata was shattered.

UN GORDO Y DOS FLACOS:

(A FAT GUY AND TWO SKINNY GUYS)

These guys were standing around outside the house of the man on the left. The guy on the right introduced him as El Gordo, though he didn’t seem to appreciate it. They invited me in and we went behind the house into a shady grotto with geckos running along the walls and a large iguana in a tamarindo tree.

MACHITOS (LITTLE MACHOS):

Belize City was a poor city of run down wooden buildings and dirt streets in the 1980s. Kids ran those streets in packs like this one, sometimes on the hustle but mostly just being kids. When I shot this most of what you see in the frame is kids having fun. But the guy in front, despite his size, is very much into being a gangster.

EL P.R.I. :

The Partido Revolutionario Institutional dominated Mexican politics for three quarters of a century through patronage, corruption and rigged elections. Party operatives plastered every available surface with posters and hand-scrawled inscriptions like the ones on the wall beside these two school girls. The Party’s reign ended in 2000 but it’s presently making a comeback.
